Even BKMC, Talib Kweli is out here getting “Turnt Up” in 2013. For Life+Times latest segment of Decoded, the Brooklyn native breaks down his Prisoner Of Conscious track, saying he wanted to pay homage to Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid In Full, but still have that new school vibe to it, which is why he linked up with Trend from League Of Starz.
Check out what else he had to say about the record below.
We haven’t been short of new material from P-Money in recent times, with the New Zealand producer returning to connect with two guests for one of the smoothest jams that he has ever released. Based around some admittedly gorgeous vocals from Aaradhna, his latest release titled “Celebration Flow” gives us plenty of reason to look forward to warm months that are approaching, which includes a trademark verse from New York’s own, Talib Kweli. P-Money’s forthcoming album Gratitude is scheduled to be released worldwide on May 21st.

With his new album Prisoner Of Conscious in stores now, Talib Kweli drops by The Breakfast Club sans a DJ Envy. After the jump they discuss why Talib hasn’t had a huge presence as a solo artist, whether or not he cares for radio spins and how he’s survived without spins, the Rick Ross controversy and how he still respects Ross as an artist, making money from DJing and doing solo shows, his recent book deal and what to expect from it, and the new class of NY rappers.

When “Get By” was first released in 2002, some thought Talib Kweli wouldn’t be a household name. In fact, some thought he was riding the coattail of a culture created by Yasiin Bey (Mos Def). 11 years later, well, Talib has stood the test of time and created his own lane.
Up top, Talib Kweli talks about the day Kanye West walked in the room with a handful of beats and what it was about “Get By” that caught his attention and ultimately made him buy all the beats on the spot. Originally planned to be used for Mariah Carey, “Get By” would soon be the hit-single Talib Kweli needed to push his solo artistry to the masses.
In just 24 hours leading up to the release of his fifth studio album “Prisoner Of Conscious,” Talib Kweli spent his day with OkayPlayer TV for a special ‘A Day In The Life’ episode. Kweli’s in the last stages of gearing up for the release with having to shoot two videos being “Human Mic” and “Hamster Wheel” which he goes on to explain the narrative and premise behind both songs. He also has a Sirius interview and set that same night as well.
“People think doing what you love for a living, that you work less from enjoying it. In order to be successful at doing what you love, you have to work twice as hard as everyone around you.”

On paper we would expect the track to sound decent but upon listening, it exceeded our expectations with the two delivering some quality rhymes over classic RZA production.
Prisoner of Conscious, which has features from Miguel, Currensy, Ryan Leslie, Kendrick Lamar, Marsha Ambrosius to name a few; will be available in stores and iTunes this Tuesday, May 7th.
Nobody’s taken the chance of going over Chris Brown’s latest single “Fine China” as of yet, but Talib Kweli changed that today. Putting his own bars over the start of the instrumental, Talib changes things up a bit.
Talib Kweli’s Prisoner of Conscious drops May 7th.
Talib Kweli stepped on the scene last night to perform his latest single “Come Here” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and though he couldn’t recruit Miguel for the performance, he was able to get Bilal to assist. As usual, backed by The Legendary Roots Crew, Bilal stepped in for Miguel’s hook and his absence was almost unnoticeable. Check out the performance up top.

Who can be mad at this collaboration? We’re unsure how these two haven’t jumped on a record together before now, but coming together for a record like this is something we can’t be mad at. “Learn Truth” serves as the latest to drop from R.A. The Rugged Man’s upcoming LP Legends Never Die and the two veteran emcees by way of New York on this record doesn’t disappoint.
Legends Never Die drops April 30th.
